What is Spiral Classifier?

Zhongxin Heavy Industry is a leading Chinese spiral classifier factory and supplier, specializing in manufacturing high-performance mineral processing equipment.
Our spiral classifier (also known as screw classifier) is widely used in mining, sand washing, and ore beneficiation plants. It forms a highly efficient closed-circuit grinding system when paired with a ball mill with spiral classifier, returning coarse materials to the mill while discharging qualified fine overflow.
They utilize the principle that solid particles have different specific gravities and different settling velocities in liquids to classify materials by particle size. They are characterized by simple structure, reliable operation, large processing capacity, stable classification zone, and high classification efficiency.

Advantages of Spiral Classifier and Reasons to Choose Us

We offer a complete range of heavy-duty industrial spiral classifiers designed to handle diverse material screening requirements:

1.High Weir Spiral Classifier: Best suited for coarse particle classification, typically yielding an overflow size of 0.4mm to 0.15mm.

2.Submerged Spiral Classifier: Designed for fine particle size separation, with an overflow size generally below 0.2mm.

3.Single and Double Spiral Classifiers: Available in single or twin screw configurations to match your specific processing capacity (dewatering screw classifier options available for sand washing).

4.Extremely low maintenance costs: Compared to hydrocyclones, spiral classifiers reduce maintenance costs by approximately 35%, have a simpler structure, and are more suitable for remote mining areas.

5.Superior recovery rates: Materials are accurately classified, with an overall recovery rate of up to 90%, significantly increasing the output of the entire production line.

6.Highly adaptable: Maintains stable output regardless of fluctuations in feed rate or concentration, making it the preferred choice for closed-circuit grinding systems.

Technical Highlights

1.High Classifying Efficiency: Optimized spiral blade pitch and angle design maximize the gravity sedimentation and lifting efficiency.

2.Excellent Wear Resistance: The spiral flights are lined with high-manganese steel, wear-resistant alloy, or rubber plates to extend service life under abrasive mining conditions.

3.Heavy-Duty Construction: Rigid tank structure and a powerful self-contained lifting device ensure smooth, continuous operation under heavy loads.

What is the working principle of the Spiral Classifier?

The spiral classifier working principle is based on the difference in settling velocity of solid particles in a liquid medium due to their varying sizes and specific gravities.

1.Slurry Feeding: The mixed ore pulp (slurry) is fed into the settlement pool located in the middle of the inclined tank.

2.Gravity Sedimentation: Under the influence of gravity, larger and heavier particles sink to the bottom of the tank quickly, forming "coarse sand" (underflow). Lighter and finer particles remain suspended in the upper layer of the water, forming "fine particles" (overflow).

3.Spiral Lifting & Dewatering: The continuously rotating spiral blades scrape the settled coarse particles from the bottom and convey them upward along the inclined tank. During this upward transport, water drains back into the pool, acting as a dewatering screw classifier. The dry, coarse particles are finally discharged from the upper sand outlet and typically returned to the ball mill for re-grinding.

4.Weir Overflow: The suspended fine particles flow out from the lower end of the tank over the overflow weir and proceed to the next stage of processing, such as flotation or gravity concentration.

Common Problems

This section is designed to address the most pressing inquiries customers may have regarding the daily operation, maintenance, product advantages, and after-sales service of our machine. Our aim is to help you gain a comprehensive understanding of our overall capabilities and enable you to make informed decisions for your projects.

It operates on the principle of settling velocity. In a liquid medium, solid particles of different sizes and specific gravities settle at different rates. Heavy, coarse particles sink to the bottom of the inclined tank and are pushed upward by the rotating spiral to the discharge port for re-grinding, while lighter, fine particles float and flow out via the overflow weir.

A high-weir classifier is suitable for coarse classification (greater than 0.15mm), while a submerged classifier, with its spiral section fully immersed in the slurry, is suitable for fine classification (less than 0.15mm).

The spiral classifier price depends heavily on the spiral diameter, screw quantity (single or double), weir type (high weir or submerged), and specific lining materials. Contact Zhongxin engineering team to get a detailed customized technical solution and factory-direct quotation.

Yes, it is usually connected to the ball mill via gravity drop to form a closed loop, automatically sending unqualified coarse material back for regrinding.

The primary difference lies in the height of the overflow weir relative to the spiral shaft: High Weir Type: The overflow weir is higher than the lower bearing of the spiral shaft but lower than the upper edge of the spiral at the overflow end. It is ideal for separating coarse particles, typically used for classifying particles with a size greater than 0.15mm. Submerged Type: The spiral at the overflow end is completely submerged beneath the liquid level. This provides a larger, more stable settlement area, making it perfect for fine-particle classification, typically for sizes less than 0.15mm (especially down to 0.074mm).

Adjusting the separation size in a screw classifier can be achieved by controlling several key operating parameters: Slurry Concentration: Lowering the feed concentration decreases viscosity, allowing particles to settle faster, which results in a finer overflow product. Feed Velocity: Keeping a stable and uniform feed prevents turbulence in the settlement pool, ensuring precise particle cutting. Weir Height : Raising the weir height increases the settlement pool volume and retention time, leading to a finer overflow.

To minimize wear and tear from abrasive ores, Zhongxin Heavy Industry provides customized wear protection options: High-Manganese Steel / Alloy Liners: Excellent for heavy duty applications with high impact and abrasion. Polyurethane (PU) / Rubber Liners: Highly recommended for wet classification of non-metallic minerals or fine-grain slurry, as they offer superior corrosion resistance and a longer lifespan.

To ensure continuous, stable operation, we recommend the following maintenance checklist: Lubrication: Regularly grease the lower submerged bearing and the upper gearbox. The lower bearing is critical as it operates underwater and must be kept sealed. Lifting Device Inspection: Periodically test the screw lifting mechanism to ensure it can lift the spiral shaft smoothly when the machine stops with load (preventing the spiral from being buried and jammed by settling solids). Wear Inspection: Monitor the thickness of the spiral liner plates and replace them before the wear reaches the main structural spiral flight.
